A woman was apprehended by Evansville Police Department officials on Sunday after allegedly attempting to steal items from Walmart, located on North Burkhardt Road.
Deborah Looney, the suspect in question, was reported to authorities by Walmart asset protection personnel at approximately 1:30 p.m. on the day of the incident.
It was revealed in an affidavit that Looney had devised a method of “stacking” items during the self-checkout process. This involved scanning two items together and then bagging both, despite only scanning one at the register.
Upon investigation, officers were provided with a receipt and surveillance footage of the theft on a disc by Walmart asset protection.
During questioning, Looney claimed that she believed the scanner would automatically register both items if she held them together while scanning.
Following her arrest, Looney was transported to the Vanderburgh County Jail and charged with theft. She was subsequently released later on Sunday.
