Accident – Death – Obituary News : A tragic incident took place in the early hours of the morning at Crystal Pier in San Diego on June 27th, 2024, resulting in the death of a young man identified as 25-year-old Caeden Laffen. The victim, who was on vacation with his family and several Oakland Firefighters, entered the ocean off of Crystal Pier after nearby bars had closed down.

According to reports, a 911 call was made when the group could no longer see Laffen. A search operation was swiftly conducted by an SDPD officer and City Lifeguards, leading to the discovery of the victim facedown in the sand a short distance north of the Pier. Tragically, Laffen was declared deceased at the scene.

It was revealed that the victim was a former U.S. Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer and a current Firefighter with the Oakland Fire Department. However, it is believed that alcohol may have played a role in the incident. The SDPD and SDFD escorted the Medical Examiner’s van with Laffen’s body to the SD County Medical Examiner’s office.

The handling agencies involved in the investigation are the SDPD and SD City Lifeguards. It is suspected that Laffen may have been caught in a rip tide, leading to his tragic death. The community is mourning the loss of a young firefighter with a promising future ahead of him.
