NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A suspected drunk driver was arrested over the weekend following a crash that left three children “significantly injured” in East Nashville.

According to court documents, officers were called to the intersection of Ellington Parkway North and Douglas Avenue on Saturday, June 29 to respond to a crash.

Details of the Incident

When officers arrived on the scene, they approached one of the drivers involved, identified as 20-year-old Balvino De La Cruz, and questioned him about his alcohol consumption. De La Cruz reportedly gave conflicting answers but later admitted to having consumed five alcoholic drinks.

Witnesses at the scene informed police that De La Cruz was driving in the wrong direction before the crash occurred.

Police attempted to conduct field sobriety testing on De La Cruz but had to stop due to his “extreme intoxication.” He exhibited signs of intoxication such as slurred speech, a strong smell of alcohol, inability to maintain balance, and frequent vomiting.

Injuries Sustained

Four individuals in another vehicle involved in the crash were taken to a local hospital. Three of the individuals, who were children as young as two years old, sustained “significant injuries,” according to officials. Court records indicate that at least two of the children suffered concussions and one may have a broken finger.

A blood sample was collected from De La Cruz at General Hospital. A records check revealed that he only possessed a temporary learner’s permit.

Charges and Legal Action

De La Cruz faces charges of two counts of vehicular assault, consumption of alcohol under 21 years old, and driving without a license. He is currently held in Metro Jail on a $40,500 bond.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident and gather more information about the circumstances surrounding the crash.
