The incident occurred around 10:18 p.m. when Utica police officers were conducting a pedestrian stop in a residential area.

Police Chief Mark Williams stated that during the stop, Nyah fled from officers and displayed what appeared to be a handgun. An officer fired one shot, wounding the teen, who was later pronounced dead at Wynn Hospital. It was later determined that the object Nyah had was a replica GLOCK 17 pellet gun.

The Utica Police Department released body camera footage on their YouTube channel, showing the events leading up to the shooting. The footage captured officers approaching Nyah and another juvenile, with Nyah running away after officers attempted to pat him down. The officers chased Nyah, with one officer ultimately firing the fatal shot.

The three officers involved in the incident, identified as Patrick Husnay, Bryce Patterson, and Andrew Citriniti, have been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation. The New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation has also launched a probe into Nyah’s death.

The shooting has sparked outrage and demands for justice in Utica’s Karen immigrant community, an ethnic minority from Southeast Asia. Hundreds of people attended a candlelight vigil in Nyah’s memory, expressing their grief and calling for accountability.
