Accident – Death – Obituary News : A tragic incident in upstate New York has left a community in mourning after a 13-year-old boy, Nyah Mway, was shot and killed by a police officer on Friday night. Mway, a member of the Karen refugee community, had just graduated from 8th grade earlier that week, making his untimely death even more devastating for his family and friends.

The events leading up to Mway’s death were captured on body camera footage released by the Utica Police Department. According to police, Mway began to run after an officer said he was going to pat him down for a weapon. During a brief chase, Mway flashed what appeared to be a gun, prompting the officer to yell “Gun!” and tackle him to the ground. It was later revealed that the weapon Mway had was a pellet gun that resembled a Glock handgun.

The incident unfolded after officers stopped Mway and another boy on a street in downtown Utica while searching for suspects in two robbery investigations. The police described the suspects as “Asian males” or “one Asian male and one dark-skinned male.” Mway’s family, who fled ethnic cleansing in Myanmar nine years ago, have questioned the police’s account of the events, claiming that their son was a good kid who had never been in trouble with the law before.

Following Mway’s death, Officer Patrick Husnay, who shot the teenager, and three other officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave. The community has expressed outrage over the incident, demanding justice for Mway and his family. A candlelight vigil was held in Mway’s honor, with locals bringing signs, balloons, flowers, and more to pay their respects.

The Utica Police Department, along with the New York Attorney General’s Office, will conduct an investigation into the matter. City and police officials have assured the community that they will be transparent during the investigation process, providing updates as legally allowed.
