Accident – Death – Obituary News : In a tragic turn of events, a 13-year-old boy named Nyah Mway was shot and killed by police officers in Utica, New York, on Friday night. The incident occurred after the officers claimed that the teenager fled and pointed a replica handgun at them.

According to a statement released by the Utica Police Department, Nyah Mway and another 13-year-old were approached by three officers who believed they matched the descriptions of robbery suspects. The officers were patrolling the area in response to recent robbery investigations involving Asian males brandishing a black firearm and stealing property from victims.

The police officers attempted to conduct a citizen stop of the two juveniles, but Nyah Mway immediately fled on foot. During the chase, he pulled out what appeared to be a handgun, later revealed to be a replica GLOCK pellet gun, and pointed it at the officers. In response, one of the officers discharged his firearm, fatally shooting the teen in the chest during a ground struggle.

Nyah Mway was given immediate first aid by the officers and taken to Wynn Hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries. The officers involved in the incident, identified as Patrick Husnay, Bryce Patterson, and Andrew Citriniti, have been placed on administrative leave with pay pending further investigation.

The body camera footage released by the police shows a chaotic struggle between Nyah Mway and the officers. The video captures the moment when the teenager appears to point the replica handgun at the police while fleeing. Bystanders can be heard screaming at the officers throughout the recordings, adding to the tense atmosphere.

The shooting has sparked outrage in the community, with tensions running high during a news conference held to address the incident. Audience members booed and interrupted the police chief and Utica mayor, leading to the conference ending prematurely. As the city of Utica grapples with the aftermath of this tragic event, two parallel investigations have been launched by the New York State Attorney General and the Utica Police Department’s Professional Standards. The community is calling for transparency and accountability in the handling of the case, as they seek justice for Nyah Mway, a refugee born in Myanmar and a member of the Karen ethnic minority.

Outside the Utica Police station, a small group of protesters gathered to demand “Justice for Nyah Mway. Forever 13.” The incident has brought to light the need for improved police training and community relations to prevent similar tragedies in the future..
