In a tragic incident in Utica, New York, a 13-year-old boy was fatally shot by a police officer after being tackled to the ground. The incident occurred on Friday night, with body camera footage released late on Saturday revealing the events leading up to the shooting.

According to police reports, the shooting took place after officers stopped two youths in connection with an armed robbery investigation. Both youths, aged 13, matched the descriptions of the robbery suspects and were in the same area at the time of the incident. One of the youths, identified as Nyah Mway, was walking in the road, violating state traffic laws.

The body camera footage shows an officer attempting to pat down the youths to ensure they were not carrying any weapons. However, Nyah Mway suddenly ran away, prompting a pursuit by the officers. During the chase, Nyah Mway allegedly pointed a replica handgun at the officers, leading to the fatal shot being fired.

Authorities later confirmed that the weapon brandished by Nyah Mway was a replica of a Glock 17 Gen 5 handgun with a detachable magazine. Despite initial beliefs that it was a real firearm, it was determined to be a non-lethal replica.

Following the shooting, the officers provided immediate first aid to Nyah Mway and transported him to Wynn Hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries. Nyah Mway, reportedly an 8th grader at Donovan Middle School, was identified as a refugee from Myanmar belonging to the Karen ethnic minority.
