The Barron County Sheriff’s Office received a distressing 911 call at approximately 2:36 p.m. reporting that a man had entered the water below a dam in an attempt to rescue a child who was struggling.

Heroic Efforts Turn Tragic

According to reports by WEAU, the grandfather had been enjoying a fishing trip with his two grandchildren when one of them encountered difficulties while swimming. Despite both children wearing life jackets, the situation quickly turned dire as the elderly man sprang into action to save his grandchild.

After successfully helping one of the children back to shore, the grandfather unfortunately succumbed to the treacherous waters and tragically drowned. Despite the valiant efforts of multiple emergency response teams, the search for the man proved fruitless initially.
