Authorities in Cookeville, Tennessee are currently on the lookout for a man who stole a Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) vehicle and crashed it in Putnam County on Sunday morning.
The incident began when troopers were investigating a suspicious vehicle at the Buffalo Valley Rest Area on Interstate 40 in Smith County. Upon approaching the vehicle, a trooper discovered a male and female sleeping inside. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle had been reported stolen.
The female occupant was identified as Karen Vallie, 42, from Montana. The male initially provided false information but was later identified as Charles D. Lawson, 55, from Tennessee. During the investigation, Lawson managed to gain control of the patrol vehicle and fled the scene while handcuffed.
According to a tweet from THP Cookeville, Lawson is currently on foot in the Tucker Ridge Road area in Putnam County. Authorities have cautioned the public not to approach him and to contact law enforcement immediately if they have any information on his whereabouts.
Lawson is described as 5′9″, 145 pounds, with brown hair. At the time of his escape, he was not wearing a shirt and was clad in blue shorts, still wearing handcuffs.
THP Aviation and multiple K-9 units have been deployed to aid in the search for Lawson. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
