The loud cracks, booms, and whistles of fireworks on the Fourth of July may be enjoyable for many, but they can often cause distress for pets. In response, Sacramento County officials and the Bradshaw Animal Shelter are appealing for volunteers to help soothe and comfort the animals during the holiday.

Celeste Ingrid, the shelter’s volunteer program coordinator, highlighted the importance of human interaction in calming anxious animals. She stated, “The noises from celebrations can be terrifying for our furry friends, and they may not understand what is happening. The human voice can be a powerful tool in calming them down.”

Volunteers are required to register online to assist at the shelter, located at 3839 Bradshaw Road in Mather. Groups of up to five individuals can register together, and teens aged 12 and above are welcome to volunteer under adult supervision.

The period following the Fourth of July typically sees an increase in lost animals being brought to shelters. To encourage pet owners to retrieve their missing animals, the Mather shelter is waiving owner fees from Monday to July 15.

Guidelines for Pet Owners

Shelter officials have offered recommendations to help pet owners ensure the safety and well-being of their pets during fireworks displays:

  • Keep pets indoors in secure, quiet areas with background noise such as television or music to mask the sound of fireworks.
  • Prevent pets from accessing items they may chew or destroy out of stress.
  • If loud noises distress your pet, consult a veterinarian for advice before the holiday.
  • Ensure all pets are properly identified, microchipped, and licensed with up-to-date information in case they become lost.

For those interested in volunteering or seeking more information, the volunteer form and additional details can be found on the shelter’s website at animalcare.saccounty.gov.
