Newport News Police Searching for Driver in Fatal Pedestrian Hit-and-Run

In a tragic incident that occurred early Monday morning, Newport News Police are currently on the lookout for the driver responsible for a hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of a pedestrian on Warwick Boulevard. The incident took place in northern Newport News, and the victim has been identified as Sonia Renee Hammonds, a 51-year-old resident of Williamsburg.

The Incident

According to police spokesman Matt Michalec, Hammonds was driving her 2002 Mercury Sable sedan on Warwick Boulevard when she lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a curb. After the crash, Hammonds exited her car and began walking towards a Raceway gas station located in the 15600 block of Warwick Boulevard.

As Hammonds approached the gas station, she was struck by an oncoming vehicle, which immediately fled the scene. The severity of the collision necessitated Hammonds’ immediate transportation to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of medical professionals, she succumbed to her injuries at 2:16 a.m.

The Newport News Police have launched an investigation into the incident. At this time, no description of the vehicle that hit Hammonds has been released, and it remains unclear whether the authorities possess any such information. Michalec also stated that it is unknown in which direction the vehicle was traveling or whether Hammonds was crossing Warwick Boulevard or walking along the side of the roadway when the collision occurred.

The Raceway gas station, where Hammonds was heading, is situated north of Fort Eustis and just a block away from Industrial Park Drive.
