Veteran Labour MP Sir Tony Lloyd Dies After Battle with Leukaemia

Veteran Labour MP Sir Tony Lloyd has sadly passed away at the age of 73, just days after revealing his battle with an “aggressive and untreatable” form of leukaemia. His family announced that he died peacefully on Wednesday morning.

In a heartfelt statement, his family expressed their devastation, saying, “We are absolutely devastated to announce the death of Sir Tony Lloyd MP, our beloved ‘Joe,’ ‘Dad,’ and ‘Grandad.’ He died peacefully this morning surrounded by his family, as was his wish.”

Sir Tony remained dedicated to his work until a few days before his passing, as his true passion lay in helping others. Throughout his life, he tirelessly served and made a difference in the lives of those he encountered, including his constituents, colleagues, friends, and family.

The family expressed their gratitude towards the healthcare professionals who provided Sir Tony with care, as well as the blood and platelet donors who extended his life by an additional four years.

A Life of Public Service

Sir Tony Lloyd dedicated over 40 years to serving the people of Greater Manchester as a Member of Parliament. He began his political career in 1983, representing the Stretford constituency. Over the years, he held various seats in the region, ultimately representing Rochdale from 2017.

During his time in Parliament, Sir Tony served as a foreign minister under Tony Blair and later became the chair of the parliamentary Labour Party. His commitment to Labour values and his decency were deeply admired by his colleagues.

He briefly took a break from Westminster in 2012 to serve as Greater Manchester’s Police and Crime Commissioner for five years. However, in 2016, he narrowly missed out on the position of mayor to Andy Burnham.

A Battle with Leukaemia

Last week, Sir Tony publicly revealed that he had been undergoing treatment for blood cancer. He acknowledged that the illness had progressed and made the decision to leave the hospital to spend his remaining time with his family.

Upon learning of his passing, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer expressed his sorrow, stating, “The death of Sir Tony Lloyd today is a terrible loss. We will remember his deep commitment to Labour values and his decency. May he rest in peace.”
