Rochelle Brown: A Trailblazing Journalist Who Shined a Light on Underrepresented Communities
Rochelle Brown, a prominent journalist and host of the public affairs show Insights on KDFW (Channel 4), passed away on Saturday in Dallas at the age of 74. Her show was known for shedding light on the issues faced by underrepresented groups across the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Hattie Hill, a close friend of Brown for over three decades, revealed that she passed away after battling an illness. Hill described Brown as a remarkable individual who touched the lives of many. Brown began her career at Channel 4 in the late 1970s after working as a talk-show host in Rochester, N.Y. Despite the station’s limited resources, she hosted, produced, and wrote segments for the show. In an interview with The Dallas Morning News in 1990, Brown recalled the challenges of working with a small team and no dedicated office space.
Insights first aired on January 6, 1980, with a vision to address the concerns of Black communities while also appealing to a wider audience. Joseph Bell, the executive producer at the time, aimed to develop programming that catered to non-white viewers. The show’s direction was initially unclear, but it soon evolved into a magazine-style program that focused on hard news and served as a platform for Black viewers to voice their concerns.
Over the years, Insights became the longest-running public affairs program in North Texas, according to the station. Its final broadcast aired on June 21, 2009, when Brown was 60 years old.

A Legacy of Breaking Barriers
Born on March 10, 1949, in Denton, Texas, Brown attended Southern Methodist University, where she earned a degree in broadcast film arts in 1971. Throughout her career, she received numerous accolades, including an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award for her impactful news segment titled “Children Having Children.”

Rochelle Brown is survived by her sister and several nieces and nephews. Her family, friends, and the community she served will gather to pay their respects at the Golden Gate Funeral Home on Friday from 1-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at North Park CME Church on Saturday at 1 p.m.
