In a shocking development, two Manipur Police commandos were killed and two others injured in a militant attack in Manipur’s Moreh area, along the Myanmar border, on Wednesday. The incident occurred during a search operation conducted by security forces. The attack resulted in the death of Commando Wangkhem Somorjit and the subsequent death of Commando Takhellambam Saileshwore due to his injuries.
The security forces were attempting to shift the injured personnel to the hospital for medical treatment when they encountered resistance from some tribals, including women. A clash ensued, leaving several tribal individuals injured.
Woman Survives Clash, Receives Medical Treatment

Earlier reports suggested that a woman had been killed in the clash. However, it was later confirmed that she was unconscious due to serious injuries but is alive and currently undergoing medical treatment at a hospital.
Intensified Gunfire and Rocket Attacks
The incident triggered heavy exchange of fire between the security forces and the suspected militants in three different locations in Moreh. The militants also fired rocket-propelled grenades at the security forces, escalating the tension in the area.
Protests and Additional Security Forces Deployed
Hundreds of protestors, including members of the leading women organization Meira Paibis, organized rallies demanding increased state forces in Moreh. However, they were stopped by the security forces as they approached the Chief Minister’s official bungalow. To address the situation, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh held a meeting with top security officials for a comprehensive review.
The Manipur government has requested the Union Home Ministry to provide additional helicopters to meet emergency requirements in the border areas of Moreh.
Appeals for Action and Collaboration
The Moreh-based Meetei Council urged the Centre and the state government to flush out the Kuki militants, supported by Myanmar insurgents, who are waging war against Indian security forces.

The curfew was imposed based on inputs regarding the likelihood of breach of peace, disturbance of public tranquility, and grave danger to human lives and property.
Arrests and Demands for Release
On Monday night, BJP leader Hemkholal Mate and former soldier Philip Khaikholal Khongsai were arrested in connection with the killing of Sub-Divisional Police Officer Chingtham Anand Kumar in October last year. In response, tribals in Moreh demanded their release, while protests erupted in Imphal Valley demanding the case to be handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and exemplary punishment for the detainees.
