Breaking News: Manipur Police Commando Killed in Armed Militant Attack
In a tragic incident today, one Manipur Police Commando was killed and three others were injured in an attack by suspected armed militants in Manipur’s Moreh area. Moreh, located on the India-Myanmar border, is a major trading town in Tengnoupal district.
According to the police, when the security personnel attempted to transfer the injured to a hospital for medical treatment, they encountered resistance from local tribals, including women. A clash ensued, resulting in several tribal individuals sustaining injuries.

Earlier reports suggested that a woman had lost her life during the clash, but later it was clarified by the police that she was unconscious due to severe injuries. She is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital.
However, the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) spokesman, Ginza Vualzong, claimed that the woman died after being struck by a security force vehicle.
Police Commando Killed, Suspected Militants on the Run
The deceased police commando has been identified as Wangkhem Somorjit, who hailed from the Malom area in Imphal’s West district. The attack took place during a search operation conducted by the security forces in Moreh to apprehend the militants.
Heavy exchange of gunfire between the security forces and the suspected militants was reported in three different locations in Moreh since Wednesday morning. The militants even fired Rocket-Propelled Grenade shells.

As tension escalated, additional security forces, including Assam Rifles, have been deployed to the bordering areas to bring the situation under control.
Fearing further violence, the district administration has imposed a total curfew in the troubled Tengnoupal district since Tuesday afternoon. This step has been taken to prevent any breach of peace and disturbance of public tranquillity.
Arrests Made in Connection with Previous Officer Killing
In a shocking development, two individuals have been arrested in connection with the killing of a Sub-Divisional police officer, Chingtham Anand Kumar, which occurred in October last year. The arrested individuals are Hemkholal Mate, a leader of the ruling BJP, and Philip Khaikholal Khongsai, a former soldier of the Army.
Following their arrest, tribals in the border town of Moreh demanded the release of the detainees. Simultaneously, widespread protests erupted in Imphal Valley, with the demand for the case to be handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and for exemplary punishment to be given to the accused.
Since December 30, a series of attacks by suspected Kuki militants have left at least 10 Manipur Police Commandos and a Border Security Force trooper injured in Moreh.

Moreh has been home to various communities, including Kuki, Meitei, Naga, Tamil, Pangal, Gorkha, and Sikh, who have lived together in peace and harmony for decades.
