The Osage Nation flags are at half-staff this week as they mourn the loss of their former Chief John Red Eagle. Red Eagle passed away on January 12 at the age of 75, with his family by his side. His funeral and commemoration took place on Wednesday at the Wakon Iron Chapel in Pawhuska.

The Osage Nation expressed their grief on Facebook, stating, “We honor the life and legacy of former Chief John D. Red Eagle. May Chief Red Eagle’s teachings and good ways continue to guide us all. Rest in peace, Chief Red Eagle.”

Red Eagle, originally from the Barnsdall area, served as the Osage Nation Chief from 2010 to 2014. He came from a long line of Chiefs, with his father, Chief Edward Red Eagle Sr., and his grandfather, Chief Paul Red Eagle, also holding the prestigious position.

Known by his Osage name Tsi Zho Zhi, which means Little Chief and comes from the Eagle Clan (Tsi Zho Clan), Red Eagle was extremely proud of his Osage ancestry and culture. He became the name giver for the Eagle Clan and was one of the last six full-blood Osage members.

In 2014, Red Eagle faced impeachment, resulting in the Osage Nation’s first-ever removal trial. The trial took place in the Congressional Chambers in Pawhuska and was a significant event in the tribe’s history. Red Eagle was accused of contract violations and interfering with investigations against a tribal employee.

Despite the impeachment, Red Eagle’s obituary highlights his commitment to education and health. He earned two bachelor’s degrees, one from the Colorado Community College of Nuclear Medicine and another from the University of Oklahoma. His expertise in nuclear medicine led him to become the chief of nuclear medicine and cardiology at Tulsa Nuclear in Hillcrest Medical Center.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Red Eagle was dedicated to the Red Eagle Native American Church and served as an associate pastor at Victory Christ Center in Tulsa.
