Canadian Conservative Author and Olympian William Gairdner Passes Away at 83

Canadian conservative author, thought leader, and Olympian William Gairdner has sadly passed away at the age of 83. The news of his death was confirmed on January 12.

Born in 1940, Gairdner was a prolific author, essayist, and columnist. He leaves behind a remarkable body of work, including books such as “The Great Divide: Why Liberals and Conservatives Will Never, Ever Agree,” “The Trouble with Canada,” and “The War Against the Family.”

Gairdner’s intellectual pursuits were not limited to writing. He earned a PhD in English literature from Stanford University and went on to teach English at York University. In addition, he represented Canada as an Olympic decathlete at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

Describing himself as a libertarian in economic matters and a Burke-ian conservative in social matters, Gairdner was known for his strong beliefs and dedication to principles. One of his significant contributions was the founding of Civitas, a Canadian society committed to upholding the principles and traditions of a free and ordered society.

Civitas’ past president, Candice Malcolm, who is also the founder of True North, expressed her admiration for Gairdner, calling his life remarkable. She highlighted his influential works, such as his books, essays, and videos, as well as his leadership in Civitas. Malcolm also emphasized the importance of Gairdner’s family, which includes five children and 16 grandchildren.

Malcolm spoke highly of Gairdner’s impact on the community and Canada as a whole. She described him as a model Canadian and praised his energy, enthusiasm, thoughtfulness, and insight. Malcolm also acknowledged Gairdner’s humility and kindness in mentoring and guiding others.
