Canadian Conservative Author and Olympian William Gairdner Dies at 83
Canadian conservative author, thought leader, and Olympian William Gairdner has passed away at the age of 83. Gairdner, known for his prolific writing career and athletic achievements, died on January 12, according to True North.

Born in 1940, Gairdner was a highly respected author, essayist, and columnist. His notable works include “The Great Divide: Why Liberals and Conservatives Will Never, Ever Agree,” “The Trouble with Canada,” and “The War Against the Family.” With a PhD in English literature from Stanford University, Gairdner later became an English professor at York University. He also represented Canada as an Olympic decathlete at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
Describing himself as a libertarian in economic matters and a Burke-ian conservative in social matters, Gairdner left a lasting legacy through the establishment of Civitas. This Canadian society, comprised of individuals dedicated to the principles and traditions of a free and ordered society, was a testament to his commitment to promoting these values.
Candice Malcolm, the founder of True North and past president of Civitas, expressed her admiration for Gairdner’s remarkable life. She described him as one of the most influential modern Canadians, emphasizing the enduring impact he made through his books, essays, videos, and the civic organization he founded and led. Malcolm also highlighted the significance of his loving family, which includes five children and 16 grandchildren.
Gairdner’s passion for Canada and his dedication to preserving its moral fabric were evident in his active involvement in the community. He contributed to various platforms, including publishing blog posts, posting videos, and writing columns for the Epoch Times. His insightful discussions covered topics such as democracy, totalitarianism, liberalism, climate alarmism, and the Constitution.

As a pillar of his community and a role model for Canadians, Gairdner’s passing is a great loss. Malcolm expressed her personal connection to Gairdner, having known him and his wife Jean through their participation in annual Civitas conferences. Malcolm regarded Gairdner as a mentor and teacher, appreciating his energy, enthusiasm, thoughtfulness, and humility.
This loss is not only felt by the community but also by the entire nation. Canada has bid farewell to a legend and a bright leader. May William Gairdner rest in peace, and may his memory continue to be a blessing.
