Shih Ming-teh, Taiwanese Democracy Activist, Passes Away at 83

Shih Ming-teh, a prominent activist who played a vital role in leading Taiwan from authoritarianism to democracy, has sadly passed away at the age of 83. He died on January 15th at a hospital in Taipei, as announced by his family. However, no specific cause of death has been provided, although Taiwanese media reports suggest that he had been battling cancer.

A Life Dedicated to the Fight for Taiwan’s Independence

Shih Ming-teh dedicated his life to fighting for Taiwan’s independence from China. His activism began at a young age, and he was even imprisoned during his mandatory military service for advocating for Taiwan’s independence. He served a 15-year sentence from 1962 to 1977.

In 1980, Shih was once again imprisoned, this time for his involvement in the Kaohsiung Incident. However, with the transition of Taiwan from martial law to a democratic system, Shih was later released and cleared of all charges by President Lee Teng-hui. His imprisonment and subsequent release garnered international attention and support for the democratic cause in Taiwan.

Shih Ming-teh continued to be an influential figure in Taiwanese politics even after his release. He served as a legislator and eventually became the chairman of the Democratic Progressive Party.
