A Lifetime of Activism

Shih Ming-teh, born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, dedicated his life to fighting for democratic ideals. From a young age, he actively participated in various activism movements, which eventually led to his imprisonment. During his mandatory military service in Kinmen, he was incarcerated for his advocacy of Taiwan’s independence from China, serving a 15-year sentence from 1962 to 1977.

In 1980, Shih found himself imprisoned once again, this time for his involvement in the Kaohsiung Incident. This event marked a pivotal moment in Taiwan’s journey towards democracy. At the time, Taiwan was under martial law, with limited political rights and no room for dissent.
