Namibian Cheetah Shaurya Passes Away at Kuno National Park

In a sad turn of events, another Namibian Cheetah has passed away at Kuno National Park. Shaurya, as he was named after being translocated from Namibia, breathed his last on Tuesday. The exact cause of his death is still unknown and will be determined after a post-mortem examination.
Shaurya’s demise marks the 10th death among the Cheetahs that were brought from Namibia to India in 2022. These Cheetahs were reintroduced in Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park as part of the ambitious Project Cheetah, launched by the Government of India in September 2022.
The Director of the Lion Project released a statement regarding Shaurya’s passing, stating that around 11 am, the tracking team noticed incoordination and a staggering gait in the Cheetah. As a precautionary measure, the animal was tranquilized and weakness was observed. Although the Cheetah was revived initially, complications arose post-revival, and despite attempts at CPR, the animal failed to respond. The exact cause of death can only be determined after a post-mortem examination.
It is worth mentioning that Shaurya was known as “Freddy” before being brought to India. The Cheetahs that were translocated from Namibia were given new names upon their arrival.

This unfortunate incident follows the death of another female Cheetah named Tblisi, who passed away in August last year. Tblisi gained recognition for making her first hunt on World Cheetah Day, which falls on December 4th. Additionally, in March 2023, Namibian Cheetah Sasha died due to a kidney ailment at Kuno National Park. Sasha was among the eight Cheetahs that were translocated from Namibia and housed in the park by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The objective of Project Cheetah is to reintroduce these magnificent creatures to India and establish a sustainable Cheetah population in the country. This initiative aims to enhance the health of ecosystems and promote ecotourism.
