Tragic Loss: Another Cheetah Dies at Kuno National Park
In a devastating blow to India’s efforts to reintroduce cheetahs into the wild, another cheetah, named Shaurya, has tragically passed away at the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. This marks the eighth cheetah death since March 2023, including seven adult cheetahs and three cubs born in India.

According to the director of the cheetah relocation project, the exact cause of Shaurya’s death can only be determined after a post-mortem examination. The distressing turn of events unfolded when the tracking team noticed signs of incoordination and a staggering gait in Shaurya around 11 am. As a precautionary measure, the animal was tranquilized, revealing weakness. Although efforts were made to revive Shaurya, complications arose post-revival, and despite attempts to perform CPR, the animal failed to respond.
India’s Ambitious Project Cheetah
India’s Project Cheetah aims to reintroduce cheetahs into the wild in the country, after their extinction nearly seven decades ago. As part of this ambitious endeavor, a total of 20 cheetahs were relocated from Namibia and South Africa to the Kuno National Park in two batches.
