Ryan Pemberton, Veteran NASCAR Garage Member, Passes Away at 54
Ryan Pemberton, a veteran of the NASCAR garage, tragically passed away on Sunday at the age of 54. Pemberton, who most recently served as the competition director for JR Motorsports Xfinity Series program, left behind a legacy of success and a lasting impact on the racing community.
Pemberton’s contributions to JR Motorsports were invaluable, as stated by JR Motorsports CEO Kelley Earnhardt Miller in a heartfelt statement, “Ryan Pemberton was instrumental to JR Motorsports’ success during the decade he spent with us. He had such a passion for competition and, as a leader, knew how to motivate everyone he worked with. He will always be part of the JRM family. Our hearts go out to his wife Andrea and daughters Payton and Britton during this tremendously difficult time.”

The exact cause of Pemberton’s passing has not been disclosed by his family.
A Decade of Success with JR Motorsports
During his tenure with JR Motorsports, spanning over a decade, Pemberton played a pivotal role in the organization’s achievements. Under his leadership, the team secured three driver’s championships, with Chase Elliott in 2014 and Tyler Reddick in consecutive years, 2018 and 2019.

A Career Filled with Accomplishments
Ryan Pemberton’s journey in NASCAR began in 1988 when he joined Jack Roush’s team as a crew member. His brother, Robin Pemberton, was Mark Martin’s crew chief at the time. Throughout his career, Pemberton made 561 starts as a crew chief in the NASCAR Cup Series, achieving notable victories with Joe Nemechek in 2004 and Brian Vickers in 2009.
One of Pemberton’s most memorable moments was serving as Martin’s crew chief when Martin narrowly missed out on victory in the 2007 Daytona 500, losing to Kevin Harvick in a photo finish. He also worked with drivers such as Derrike Cope, Ernie Irvan, Jerry Nadeau, and Dave Blaney.
In addition to his accomplishments in the Cup Series, Pemberton recorded three victories as a crew chief in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, working with Larry Pearson and Regan Smith.
A Tragic Loss for the Pemberton Family
The past four years have been filled with devastating losses for the Pemberton family. In 2021, they mourned the loss of Bray Pemberton, Ryan’s nephew and Robin’s son. Then, in 2022, Randy Pemberton, Robin and Ryan’s brother, passed away. Randy was well-known for his television work in the sport.
The passing of Ryan Pemberton has left a void in the NASCAR community and serves as a reminder of the fragility of life. His dedication, passion, and leadership will be deeply missed, and his contributions to the sport will not be forgotten.
