In recent days, several areas in the region have experienced heavy snowfall, resulting in challenging wintry conditions on the roads. The ongoing snowfall has prompted Police Scotland’s Highlands and Islands Division to issue a warning and advise motorists to exercise caution.

Police Scotland’s Highlands and Islands Division took to social media to alert the public about the ongoing heavy snowfall causing issues on various roads in the north. They urged individuals to consider the necessity of their journeys before setting off and emphasized the importance of driving according to the road conditions.

The police division provided some essential tips for motorists to ensure their safety on the roads. They advised drivers to allow extra time for their journeys and plan their routes accordingly. Additionally, they mentioned that main roads would be cleared first but cautioned that this process might take some time.
Furthermore, they suggested wearing comfortable and dry shoes while driving to prevent feet from slipping on the pedals. They also advised checking fuel levels to ensure having more than what is required for the journey in case of unexpected delays. Clearing all windows using a scraper and de-icer and waiting until the windscreen is fully demisted is also crucial for maintaining visibility.
In terms of braking, the police division recommended applying brakes gently to avoid any sudden movements. They also encouraged leaving plenty of room between cars when driving uphill or waiting for a clear path to avoid stopping partway up. To navigate hills smoothly, they advised maintaining a constant speed and minimizing gear changes.
When driving downhill, the police division recommended slowing down before reaching the hill, using a low gear, and attempting to avoid braking. Leaving ample space between vehicles is crucial to account for any unexpected circumstances.
In the event of getting stuck, the police division advised straightening the steering and clearing snow from the wheels. Additionally, placing a sack or old rug in front of the driving wheels can provide the tires with improved traction.
