Longtime NFL Quarterback Norm Snead Dies at 84

Norm Snead, a longtime NFL quarterback and four-time Pro Bowl honoree, passed away at the age of 84. His death was confirmed by a spokesperson for the University of Wake Forest football, where Snead played collegiately before embarking on his 16-season NFL career from 1961 to 1976.

Snead, a native of Halifax County, Virginia, was drafted second overall in the 1961 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins. He also received a draft offer from the Buffalo Bills but chose to play for Washington in the NFL.

During his first three seasons in the NFL, Snead showcased his skills with Washington, earning two Pro Bowl selections. However, he was later traded to the Philadelphia Eagles ahead of the 1964 season. Snead spent seven seasons with the Eagles, adding another Pro Bowl appearance to his accolades. In 1971, he played one season for the Minnesota Vikings before joining the New York Giants in 1972.

A Versatile Career

Snead’s time with the Giants proved to be fruitful, as he earned yet another Pro Bowl selection in his first season with the team. After two-plus seasons with the Giants, he played for the San Francisco 49ers from 1974 to 1975. Snead returned to the Giants for one final season in 1976 before retiring from the NFL.

Throughout his 16-year NFL career, Snead started in 159 games and finished with a record of 52 wins, 100 losses, and 7 ties. He threw a total of 196 touchdowns and 257 interceptions, accumulating 30,797 passing yards. Snead completed 2,276 passes out of 4,353 attempts, with a completion percentage of 52.3%.

Norm Snead’s sporting prowess extended beyond football. During his time at Warwick High School in Virginia, he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. His outstanding achievements led to his induction into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 1984.
