Norm Snead, Former NFL Quarterback and Four-Time Pro Bowl Selection, Passes Away at 84
Norm Snead, a renowned NFL quarterback who played for 16 seasons in the 1960s and ’70s, has sadly passed away at the age of 84. Mr. Snead’s brother, Danny, confirmed that he died on Sunday in Naples, Fla. The exact cause of his death has not been provided at this time.
A Legendary Career on the Field
Norm Snead made a name for himself in the NFL after being selected as the second overall pick in the 1961 NFL draft by the Washington team. Additionally, he was also chosen 33rd in the American Football League draft by the Buffalo Bills. Despite having multiple options, Snead opted to play for Washington and spent three seasons there. During his time with the team, he made two Pro Bowl appearances and showcased his exceptional skills on the field.

After his stint with Washington, Snead was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for Sonny Jurgensen and Claude Crabb. Jurgensen, a key player in Philadelphia’s league championship victory in 1960, went on to become a prominent figure for Washington. He was eventually inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and became a long-time broadcaster for the team.
Snead played for the Philadelphia Eagles for seven seasons, although the team never reached the playoffs during that time. Despite the team’s lack of success, Snead’s talent shone through, earning him a Pro Bowl selection in 1965. That season, he threw for 15 touchdowns and 2,346 yards, leading the team to five victories with three game-winning drives.
As his career progressed, Snead played for several other teams. He spent one season with the Minnesota Vikings, followed by two and a half seasons with the New York Giants. He then played another one and a half seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. Snead returned to the Giants in 1976 before ultimately retiring from professional football in 1977.

Throughout his NFL career, Norm Snead started in 159 games, achieving a record of 52 wins, 100 losses, and 7 ties. He threw an impressive total of 196 touchdowns, showcasing his exceptional throwing skills. Prior to his professional career, Snead attended Wake Forest, where he earned All-ACC honors twice and set numerous conference records over three years (1958-1960).

Originally from Halifax County, Virginia, Snead began his athletic journey at Warwick High School, where he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. In recognition of his achievements, he was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 1984.
