Norm Snead, a renowned NFL quarterback who played for 16 seasons during the 1960s and ’70s and was a four-time Pro Bowl selection, has passed away at the age of 84.

Norm Snead’s family informed Wake Forest football, where he played collegiately before turning pro, of his passing on Sunday. The cause of death has not been provided at this time.
Snead was a highly sought-after talent and was chosen as the second overall pick in the 1961 NFL draft by Washington. He was also selected 33rd by the Buffalo Bills in the American Football League draft that same year. Ultimately, Snead decided to join Washington and played for the team for three seasons, earning two Pro Bowl appearances.
In a significant trade, Snead was later transferred to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for Sonny Jurgensen and Claude Crabb. Jurgensen, who had led Philadelphia to a league championship in 1960, became the face of the franchise for Washington and went on to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Snead spent seven seasons with the Eagles during a period when the team struggled to reach the playoffs. However, he still managed to earn a Pro Bowl selection in 1965. That year, he threw for 15 touchdowns and 2,346 yards, leading the team with three game-winning drives, despite their 5-9 overall record.
In the later stages of his career, Snead played for multiple teams, including the Minnesota Vikings, the New York Giants, and the San Francisco 49ers. He returned to the Giants in 1976 before retiring from professional football in 1977.
A Legacy on the Field
Throughout his career, Norm Snead started in 159 NFL games, accumulating 52 wins, 100 losses, and 7 ties. He threw a total of 196 touchdowns, while his 257 interceptions rank sixth on the all-time list.
Before his professional career, Snead excelled at Wake Forest University. He earned All-ACC honors twice and set over a dozen conference records during his three years at the university from 1958 to 1960. Known for his exceptional passing skills, Snead once humorously remarked, “I couldn’t run and couldn’t get out of my own way but could throw the football.”
A Life Remembered
Born in Halifax County, Virginia, Norm Snead attended Warwick High School, where he played football, basketball, and baseball. In recognition of his accomplishments, he was inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 1984.
