Former drummer James Kottak, renowned for his work with hard rock bands Scorpions and Kingdom Come, sadly passed away on Tuesday morning in Louisville, Kentucky. He was 61 years old.

At this time, specific details surrounding the circumstances of his death remain unknown. However, his daughter, Tobi, confirmed the news of his passing to TMZ.

During the 1980s, Kottak played a significant role in Kingdom Come, contributing to their Led Zeppelin-style music that propelled them to prominence. He also toured with various other bands, including KrunK, Montrose, Wild Horses, and Buster Brown.

In 1996, Kottak joined the German band Scorpions and served as their drummer until 2016 when he was dismissed due to his battle with alcoholism. He had been candid about his struggles with drinking, stating in an April interview that his journey to sobriety was an ongoing process.

Beyond his musical accomplishments, Kottak made appearances on reality TV shows, most notably in 2012’s “Ex-Wives of Rock.”

A Life Full of Highs and Lows

James Kottak’s personal life included a high-profile marriage to Athena Lee, the sister of musician Tommy Lee, which lasted from 1996 to 2010. Their relationship was marked by a contentious custody battle over their son, Matthew.

Guitarist Mark Kendall of Great White expressed his sorrow on social media, revealing that he had reached out to Kottak a month prior to offer support and help with his alcoholism. Unfortunately, Kottak wasn’t ready to accept the assistance. Kendall added, “I could have gotten him into rehab free through connections, and I told him that. I’m so sad to hear of his passing. I feel bad for everyone who loved him, including his grandchild. Rest in peace.”

Scorpions released a statement on Tuesday, expressing their grief: “James was a wonderful human being, a great musician, and a loving family man. He was our ‘Brother from another Mother’ and will be truly missed. Rock ‘n’ Roll Forever.”
