Gretna Police Investigating Death of Man Found Shot on Walking Trail
Gretna police are currently investigating the death of a man who was found shot on a walking trail beneath the elevated West Bank Expressway. The incident occurred on Friday night, and as of now, the police have not yet identified a suspect or motive in the case.
Identity of Victim Revealed
The victim has been identified as Ronald McClure, a 47-year-old resident of Avondale. The Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office confirmed his identity.

Discovery of the Victim
The Gretna Police Department received a call at around 9:24 p.m. reporting that a man was lying down on the trail at 70 West Bank Expressway. Upon arrival, officers found McClure with at least one gunshot wound.
Tragic Outcome
Despite the efforts of the authorities, McClure was pronounced dead at the scene.
A History of Violence in Gretna
This unfortunate incident marks the second killing in Gretna in 2024. The previous incident involved the shooting of Jhonas Garcia Carbajal, a 39-year-old resident of Terrytown, in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Gretna Boulevard. Patricia Lopez Melgar, a 25-year-old, was arrested for allegedly being a principal to second-degree murder in that case. However, the suspected shooter in Garcia’s death remains unidentified and at large.
It is worth mentioning that prior to the recent killings, Gretna had not seen a homicide since 2022.

The Gretna Police Department’s Detective Bureau is urging anyone with information about Ronald McClure’s shooting death to come forward. They can be reached at 504-366-4374. A reward of $2,500 is being offered for information that leads to an indictment, and callers can remain anonymous and do not need to testify.
