A Life Dedicated to the Fight for Democracy

Shih Ming-teh was born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and from a young age, he became deeply involved in activism. His unwavering commitment to the cause of democracy led to his imprisonment on multiple occasions. While serving in the military, he was incarcerated for advocating Taiwan’s independence from China. He endured a 15-year sentence from 1962 to 1977.

In 1980, Shih found himself behind bars once again, this time for his role in the Kaohsiung Incident, a pivotal event that played a significant role in Taiwan’s transition to democracy. At the time, Taiwan was under martial law, with no room for political dissent or basic political rights such as voting. Shih, who published a magazine called Formosa promoting democratic ideals, organized a protest in Kaohsiung in December 1979. The demonstration resulted in clashes between the police and protesters, leading to the arrest of numerous activists, including Shih. He was then sentenced to life in prison.

However, with the island’s shift from martial law to a democratic system, Shih was eventually released and cleared of all charges by President Lee Teng-hui. His tireless efforts and the sacrifices he made for the cause of democracy earned him public support in Taiwan as well as international recognition.
