Renowned Urdu Poet Munawwar Rana Passes Away at 71

Lucknow, January 15, 2024 – Renowned Urdu poet Munawwar Rana breathed his last on Sunday at a hospital in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, following a cardiac arrest. He was 71 years old and had been battling a prolonged illness for several months.

Munawwar Rana, born on November 26, 1952, in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh, was widely recognized for his significant contributions to Urdu literature, particularly his ghazals. Throughout his career, he received numerous accolades, including the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2014 for his poem, ‘Shahdaba.’ However, he later returned the award, citing ‘intolerance’ in the country.

A revered figure in Urdu poetry, Munawwar Rana’s ability to capture the essence of life resonated with people around the world. His works were admired for their depth and emotion.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on Munawwar Rana’s demise. He acknowledged the poet’s rich contributions to Urdu literature and poetry. PM Modi took to X to share his thoughts, “Pained by the passing away of Shri Munawwar Rana Ji. He made rich contributions to Urdu literature and poetry. Condolences to his family and admirers. May his soul rest in peace.”

Uttar Pradesh Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak also mourned the loss of Munawwar Rana, stating, “We and the literary world are saddened by his passing away. May God give his family the strength to bear this loss.”

Remembering Munawwar Rana’s Legacy and Contributions

Munawwar Rana’s mortal remains were brought to his residence in Lucknow in the early hours of Monday. A large number of people, including family members, gathered outside his Lal Kuan residence. Senior Samajwadi Party leader Juhi Singh also paid her respects at Munawwar Rana’s house.

Alongside the Sahitya Akademi Award, Munawwar Rana received several other honors throughout his career, including the Ameer Khusro Award, the Mir Taqi Mir Award, the Ghalib Award, the Dr Zakir Hussain Award, and the Saraswati Samaj Award. His poem on ‘Maa’ (mother) was one of his most celebrated works, praising the virtue of motherhood.

Munawwar Rana is survived by his wife, Raina, four daughters, and a son.

The literary world has lost a prominent voice with the passing of Munawwar Rana. His contributions to Urdu literature and poetry will be remembered for years to come. May his soul find eternal peace.
