Grammy Award Winning Country Music Artist Jo-El Sonnier Passes Away at 77
Jo-El Sonnier, a renowned country music artist and recipient of the prestigious Grammy Award, has sadly passed away at the age of 77. The tragic incident occurred right after Sonnier’s remarkable show at the Llano Country Opry in Llano, Texas. Tracy Pitcox of Heart of Texas Records, Knel Radio, shared the heartbreaking news via Facebook, stating, “Jo-El Sonnier had just completed an incredible show at the Llano Country Opry in Llano, Texas. He had entertained over an hour and ended with his signature ‘Tear Stained Letter’. He received a standing ovation and I asked him to do ‘Jambalaya’ as an encore.”

Pitcox further revealed that Sonnier mentioned the need for a few minutes of rest before signing autographs. Tragically, he suffered a cardiac arrest and was immediately air flighted to Austin. Despite efforts to revive him, he was pronounced deceased upon arrival.
It is never easy to lose a legend, but Sonnier’s final moments were spent doing what he loved most – entertaining his fans. His loving wife, Bobbye, was by his side throughout his last performance, providing comfort and support.
A Natural-Born Talent
Sonnier’s musical journey started at a young age, showcasing his natural-born talent. According to Pitcox, he began playing his brother’s accordion when he was just three years old. By the age of six, he had already made his first radio performance, and at eleven, he released his first recordings. In the 1970s, Sonnier signed with Mercury Nashville Records, but the deal did not bring the desired success. He then transitioned from country music to Cajun music under the Rounder Records label. Although he did not achieve significant commercial success during this period, he did receive a Grammy in recognition of his extraordinary talent.
