Retired UM Professor Dr. Stephen Parker dies at 68

MONTEVALLO – The University of Montevallo has announced the unfortunate passing of Dr. Stephen Parker, a highly respected retired professor emeritus of sociology. This somber news was shared with the public through a heartfelt post on the university’s official Facebook account on the morning of Friday, January 12, 2024.
Dr. Stephen Parker, aged 68, succumbed to a short battle with pancreatic cancer on January 9. He dedicated his career to the University of Montevallo, serving as a full-time faculty member from 1992 until his retirement in 2020. President John Stewart expressed his condolences and highlighted Dr. Parker’s impact on the university and the Montevallo community. Known for his thoughtfulness and inspiration, Dr. Parker was a cherished member of the university’s family of learners.
During his tenure, Dr. Parker’s teachings covered a wide range of subjects including social stratification, gender and culture, sociological theory, and the sociology of education and popular music. He was also an active member of the faculty senate, serving as its president for two terms, from 2005-2006 and again from 2016-2017.
President Stewart, on behalf of the entire university, extended his sympathies to Dr. Parker’s family and loved ones. The loss of such a remarkable professor is deeply felt by the entire community.

Dr. Parker’s scholarly contributions extended beyond the classroom. He published several articles in respected journals such as the American Journal of Sociology, Journal of Contemporary Ethnography, and Sociology of Education. Additionally, he co-authored a book titled “School Talk: Gender and Adolescent Culture” alongside Donna Eder and Kathy Evans. This book received recognition in the form of the North Central Sociological Association’s “Scholarly Achievement Award.” It was first published in 1995 and remains available for purchase through various outlets, including Amazon.
Beyond his academic pursuits, Dr. Parker was a devoted family man and an active member of his church. He dedicated his time to leading Sunday school classes, mentoring church youth groups, and occasionally delivering sermons to the congregation. As a father, teacher, coach, friend, and mentor, he touched the lives of countless individuals throughout his lifetime. Dr. Parker found joy in life’s simplest pleasures and approached everything he was involved in with deep care and passion.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, January 13, at University Baptist Church in Montevallo. The service served as a touching tribute to Dr. Parker’s life, his family, and his numerous achievements.
