U1232 Attacks Ships off Halifax: Remembering RCN

On this day, April 1, 1945, the U-boat U1232 launched a deadly attack on two ships off the coast of Halifax. The SS Polarland was sunk, while the MV Nipiwan Park was broken in two. The forward section of the Nipiwan Park sank, while the stern section was towed to Halifax. This tragic incident resulted in the loss of 19 lives, but thanks to the heroic efforts of HMCS KENTVILLE, five survivors from the Polarland were rescued.

U1232 Strikes

U1232, a German U-boat, was part of the Kriegsmarine’s fleet during World War II. On that fateful day, U1232 targeted the SH-194 convoy, which was sailing through the waters off Halifax. The convoy consisted of several merchant ships and was escorted by naval vessels, including HMCS KENTVILLE.

U1232 successfully attacked the convoy, launching torpedoes at both the SS Polarland and the MV Nipiwan Park. The torpedoes struck their targets, causing severe damage and leading to the sinking of the Polarland. The Nipiwan Park was left split in two, with the forward section sinking and the stern section being towed back to Halifax.

Tragedy at Sea

The sinking of the Polarland and the breaking of the Nipiwan Park had devastating consequences. A total of 19 crew members lost their lives in this tragic event. The exact circumstances surrounding their deaths remain unknown, but it serves as a somber reminder of the dangers faced by those who served at sea during wartime.
