A Parent’s Harrowing Experience: Campus Safety in Crisis

On a seemingly ordinary Sunday at 4:09 PM, a text from my daughter changed everything. "Can you pray for the campus?" she wrote. Those words sent a chill down my spine, but nothing could prepare me for what followed. Just moments later, I received another message: "I was in the library, and 4 cops came in with rifles, screaming for everyone to RUN." My heart raced as I imagined her standing at the front desk, surrounded by chaos.

For the next three hours, the world outside became a whirlwind of conflicting reports. There were whispers of an active shooter on campus, followed by frantic updates suggesting there was no shooter at all. The uncertainty was maddening, leaving students, parents, and faculty in a state of distress. Social media buzzed with reactions and rumors, each notification tightening the grip of fear.

The reality of campus safety has never felt more precarious. Educational institutions must prioritize effective communication during crises, ensuring that students and parents receive timely and accurate information. As I sat anxiously waiting for updates, I realized how vital it is for schools to have robust emergency protocols in place.

This experience serves as a reminder of the importance of community and support during times of crisis. As a parent, my instinct was to protect my child, yet I found myself relying on the strength of prayer and the hope that she remained safe.
