Known for her vibrant personality, Kathleen celebrated her 90th birthday just a few weeks ago on October 17. Her death follows the passing of her husband, renowned RTÉ broadcaster Gay Byrne, five years prior, whose anniversary is marked on November 4.
Kathleen was born in Saggart, Dublin, to her parents Tom and Dinah. With a natural flair for performance, she gained recognition as a harpist and folk singer before joining RTÉ as the first continuity announcer to appear on screen during the launch of Telefís Éireann on New Year’s Eve in 1961. Her love story with Gay Byrne began in 1957, and they were often referred to as ‘Ireland’s golden couple’. Their marriage in 1964 at Saggart Parish Church was a momentous occasion that attracted cheers from a gathering crowd, a testament to their popularity. While Gay became a household name through shows like *The Late Late Show*, Kathleen remained a dedicated wife and mother, focusing on her family and her own creative endeavors.
Later in life, Kathleen found joy in writing children’s books featuring a character named Pigín, inspired by her grandchildren. This venture not only delighted young readers but also earned her an Irish Book Award. In her later years, after Gay’s passing in 2019 and during his illness, Kathleen often reflected on their ‘charmed life’ together, reminding herself to cherish the blessings she had. She leaves behind her two daughters, Crona and Suzy, and five grandchildren, ensuring her legacy continues.
