Nigeria’s army chief, LtGen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has reportedly passed away at the age of 56 after a “period of illness,” as announced by President Bola Tinubu. The news broke late Tuesday night in Lagos, although specific details about his illness haven’t been disclosed. In a heartfelt statement shared on X by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu extended his condolences to Lagbaja’s family.
The announcement indicates that Lagbaja, born on February 28, 1968, had a notable military career, having been appointed Chief of Army Staff on June 19, 2023. His journey began at the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987, culminating in an impressive rise through the ranks. Notably, he held various leadership positions, including command roles in critical internal security operations like Operation Zaki and Lafiya Dole. His academic achievements also stood out, with a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the US Army War College.
President Tinubu’s statement highlighted Lagbaja’s contributions to the nation and expressed sorrow over the loss. The President has ordered a rescheduling of the Federal Executive Council meeting and mandated that flags be flown at half-mast nationwide for seven days in memory of the late army chief.
Interestingly, Lagbaja’s passing marks a concerning trend in Nigeria’s military history, being the third Chief of Army Staff to die while in office. Past tragedies include the helicopter crash that claimed the life of Joseph Akahan in 1967 and the fatal plane crash involving Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru in 2021. As the nation mourns, the circumstances surrounding Lagbaja’s death leave many questions unanswered.
