New Delhi: The beloved folk singer Sharda Sinha, affectionately known as ‘Bihar Kokila,’ has allegedly passed away at the age of 72 after a brave battle with cancer. Her melodious voice brought iconic Chhath songs like “Kartik Maas Ijoriya” and “Suraj Bhaile Bihaan” to life, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of many.
Sharda was undergoing treatment for multiple myeloma at AIIMS-Delhi. It’s quite poignant that she left this world on the very first day of Chhath, a festival dedicated to the sun god, where her music played a crucial role. It’s almost as if destiny had scripted her farewell in a way that intertwined with her lifelong devotion to the festival.
Known for her powerful renditions, Sharda was often compared to the great Begum Akhtar. She managed to blend classical and folk styles in a manner that resonated with many. This year, despite her declining health, she released a prayer song titled “Dukhwa Mitayin Chhathi Maiya,” reflecting her unwavering spirit even in her final days.

From her roots in Supaul, Bihar, to her contributions to Bollywood with songs in hits like “Maine Pyar Kiya,” she was a pioneer in promoting the rich folk traditions of Bihar.
