WEBBERVILLE, Mich. — Michigan State police (MSP) have shared some alarming updates regarding the deadly crash that occurred on I-96 over the weekend. According to Lieutenant Renee Gonzalez, surveillance video from a nearby gas station allegedly shows that the truck involved never slowed down, simply plowing into a line of vehicles.
This horrific incident unfolded late Saturday night, injuring 17 people and taking the lives of four, including three members of the same family. The crash reportedly involved 15 vehicles, including a semi-truck that caught fire after the collision. Lieutenant Gonzalez mentioned that the truck driver appeared to be preoccupied, failing to notice the slowdown in traffic, which ultimately led to the tragic pile-up.
The crash happened just before 11:45 p.m., shortly after the interstate had reopened, following utility work by DTE Energy. It seems that the traffic was moving slowly due to the previous blockage, making the situation even more precarious. Among those affected were members of the Northview High School band who were returning from a competition. Thankfully, while they sustained some damage to their trailer and instruments, no serious injuries were reported among the group.
“While we are grateful that nobody from the school district was seriously injured… our hearts go out to those families and friends who were impacted by the accident,” the superintendent stated, emphasizing the district’s commitment to supporting affected students and families.
