Bernard “Bernie” Marcus: A Legacy Remembered
It’s being reported that Bernard “Bernie” Marcus, co-founder of The Home Depot, has sadly passed away at the age of 95. Born to Russian Jewish immigrants, Bernie grew up in Newark, New Jersey, and always had big dreams. Initially aspiring to become a doctor, he shifted gears due to financial constraints and earned a pharmacy degree from Rutgers University. He often joked about skipping classes to sell Amana freezers door-to-door, foreshadowing his future in retail.
In 1978, after a significant career at Handy Dan Improvement Centers, Marcus faced a pivotal moment when he was let go. But instead of letting it get him down, he teamed up with Arthur Blank to create The Home Depot. Their vision was clear: a one-stop shop for do-it-yourselfers. The first store opened in Atlanta in 1979, and the rest is history. Fast forward to today, and Home Depot has over 2,000 stores and employs more than 500,000 people. It’s now the world’s largest home improvement chain, boasting sales of nearly $153 billion in 2023.
