Teenager Allegedly Struck by Vehicle While Bicycling in Porter Township
A heartbreaking incident occurred recently in Porter Township, where a 16-year-old Valparaiso teenager, Mitchell Sterling, lost his life after being allegedly hit by a vehicle while riding his bicycle on County Road 500 West. According to the Porter County Sheriff’s police (PCSP), the tragic event unfolded as Sterling was biking northbound, north of State Road 2.
Witness reports suggest that the area where the collision happened is poorly lit. The driver, who was also heading north in an SUV, claimed they did not see the bicyclist until it was too late. After the collision, the driver quickly returned to the scene and found Sterling lying in the roadway. Emergency responders, along with an off-duty medic, rushed to provide lifesaving measures until Sterling could be transported to a local hospital. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, he succumbed to his injuries, as shared by Sgt. Ben McFall.

The PCSP’s crash Reconstruction Team is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident. “Please keep the family and friends of the Sterling family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” McFall expressed. The community is left in mourning, reflecting on the fragility of life and the need for heightened awareness on the roads.
