Tragic accident on Highway 18: Community Mourns Teen’s Loss

In a heartbreaking turn of events, teenager Daniel Ranns has been identified as the victim of this tragic crash. Daniel, the grandson of John Ranns, the former mayor of Metchosin, lived with his family near Greater Victoria after moving from South Carolina just four years ago. John shared that they were incredibly close, making this loss even more devastating.
John described Daniel as a bright and independent thinker, someone who always wore a smile. He was looking forward to voting for the first time in the provincial election, which speaks volumes about his enthusiasm for life. On the day of the accident, Daniel was in the Lake Cowichan area to buy a fifth-wheel trailer for his family’s farm.
The community has rallied around Daniel’s family during this difficult time. With his father serving as president of the Juan de Fuca Lacrosse Association and his mother involved in women’s lacrosse, support is pouring in from friends and colleagues. Daniel was not just a recent high school graduate; he was also a lacrosse coach and a beloved figure among his peers.
The Westshore Bears Lacrosse team expressed their sorrow on social media, stating, “Once again we are being made to endure the pain of losing one of our Bears — Daniel Ranns — the best definitely do die young.” Many friends left heartfelt condolences, highlighting the profound impact Daniel had on those around him.

According to RCMP reports, the accident happened around 2:22 p.m. Witnesses indicated that a compact pickup truck drifted into oncoming traffic, colliding with an eastbound one-tonne pickup. Despite the immediate response from emergency services, Daniel was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other driver sustained minor injuries.
The investigation is still ongoing, and police are asking for anyone with information or dash cam footage to reach out to the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP at 250-748-5522.
