Heartbreaking Collision Claims Young Life on Highway 18

On November 3, a head-on collision on Highway 18 allegedly resulted in the tragic death of a teenager named Daniel Ranns. Daniel, the grandson of former Metchosin mayor John Ranns, had recently moved to Vancouver Island from South Carolina with his family. His sudden passing has left a profound impact on those who knew him.

Daniel was reportedly in the Lake Cowichan area to purchase a fifth-wheel trailer he intended to live in on his family’s farm when the accident occurred. John Ranns shared, “We’re just still trying to get our heads around it.” He described Daniel as a bright young man with a love for life, someone who had recently graduated high school and was eager to start university.

Witnesses claim a westbound compact pickup truck drifted into the eastbound lane, leading to a collision with Daniel’s one-tonne pickup. Despite the quick response from emergency crews, Daniel was pronounced dead at the scene, even though first responders made every effort to save him. His family has received immense support from their community during this trying time.

The Westshore Bears Lacrosse team, where Daniel served as a coach, expressed their sorrow in a heartfelt Facebook post, stating, “Once again we are being made to endure the pain of losing one of our Bears — the best definitely do die young.” Friends and family have flooded social media with condolences, remembering Daniel as someone who always brought a smile to everyone’s face.

The North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident. They are calling on anyone who witnessed the event, particularly the driver of a white truck who swerved to avoid the collision, to reach out.
