Tragic Incident on Highway 18 Claims Life of Teenager

On November 3, a heartbreaking accident took place on Highway 18, resulting in the death of a young man named Daniel Ranns. Reports circulating on social media and traditional news outlets identify him as the victim of a head-on collision that shocked the local community.

Daniel was a beloved member of the Westshore Bears Lacrosse team, and the organization expressed their grief on Facebook by sharing, “Once again we are being made to endure the pain of losing one of our Bears — Daniel Ranns — the best definitely do die young.” The outpouring of condolences from friends and family highlights just how impactful his loss is to those who knew him.

The North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP responded to the crash at approximately 2:22 p.m. Witnesses claim that a compact pickup truck drifted into the eastbound lane, colliding with a one-tonne pickup. The driver of the smaller truck was trapped inside, and despite the heroic efforts of first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Meanwhile, the other driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

Authorities closed the highway to facilitate the emergency response, and they are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash. They are particularly interested in speaking with anyone who may have witnessed the incident, especially the driver of a white truck who reportedly swerved to avoid the collision.
