Alleged Fatal Collision Claims Life on Highway 18

On November 3, a head-on collision on Highway 18 reportedly resulted in the death of a young man named Daniel Ranns. Daniel, a teenager, has been identified as the victim in this unfortunate incident. He was the grandson of John Ranns, the former mayor of Metchosin, a community near Greater Victoria.

Daniel’s family moved from South Carolina to Vancouver Island four years ago, and According to his grandfather, he was a bright light in their lives. John expressed his heartache, saying, “We’re just still trying to get our heads around it. Daniel always had a smile on his face and was quick with a conversation.” This close-knit family was left reeling, trying to process the loss of someone so young and full of promise.

On the day of the crash, Daniel was reportedly in the Lake Cowichan area looking to purchase a fifth-wheel trailer for living on his family’s farm. Tragically, that was when the collision occurred. The community has rallied around the Ranns family, providing support during this tough time. Daniel, a lacrosse coach and recent high school graduate, had plans to attend university and was known for his zest for life.

The Westshore Bears Lacrosse organization, where Daniel played, shared their grief on Facebook, emphasizing the deep loss felt by his teammates and friends. Witnesses indicated that a compact pickup truck drifted into oncoming traffic, leading to the crash. While the other driver suffered minor injuries, Daniel was pronounced dead at the scene despite the best efforts of first responders.
