Allegedly, One Person Dies in Highway 18 Collision
On November 3, a head-on collision on Highway 18 claimed the life of teenager Daniel Ranns. This tragic event has left many in the community mourning the loss of a bright young man who had just graduated from high school and was excited about his future. Daniel was reportedly looking to purchase a fifth-wheel trailer to live on his family’s farm when the accident occurred.
Daniel was well-known in the area, being the grandson of John Ranns, the former mayor of Metchosin. John described him as a joyful and independent thinker who was excited to participate in the provincial elections for the first time. “We’re just still trying to get our heads around it,” he expressed, highlighting the deep bond he had with Daniel and the family. The support pouring in from friends and colleagues has been a source of comfort during this difficult time.

The accident unfolded around 2:22 PM when a westbound compact pickup truck reportedly drifted into the oncoming lane, colliding with Daniel’s eastbound one-tonne pickup. Witnesses indicated that the compact truck came to a stop in a ditch, and despite the best efforts of first responders, Daniel was pronounced dead at the scene. Fortunately, the other driver sustained only minor injuries.
Daniel’s involvement in lacrosse also made him a beloved figure in the community. The Westshore Bears Lacrosse team shared their grief on social media, stating, “Once again we are being made to endure the pain of losing one of our Bears — Daniel Ranns — the best definitely do die young.” Such heartfelt messages from friends and teammates emphasize the impact Daniel had on those around him.
