Tragic Head-On Collision on Highway 18 Claims Young Life
On November 3, the community was shaken by a head-on collision on Highway 18 that left one person dead. Reports suggest that the victim, identified as teenager Daniel Ranns, was a vibrant young man with a promising future ahead of him.
Daniel was the grandson of John Ranns, the former mayor of Metchosin, a town near Greater Victoria. The family, originally from South Carolina, had moved to Vancouver Island just four years ago. John spoke fondly of his grandson, recalling his infectious smile and his knack for engaging conversation. “Daniel was an independent thinker who was thrilled to vote for the first time in the provincial election,” John shared, still grappling with the loss.

On the day of the accident, Daniel was in the Lake Cowichan area to purchase a fifth-wheel trailer for his family’s farm. Sadly, his plans were cut short when a westbound compact pickup truck drifted into oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with Daniel’s eastbound one-tonne pickup. First responders rushed to the scene, but despite their efforts, Daniel was pronounced dead shortly after the crash.
The lacrosse community is mourning the loss of Daniel, who was actively involved as a coach and player with the Westshore Bears Lacrosse team. They expressed their grief on social media, stating, “The best definitely do die young.” His family, deeply connected to the local lacrosse scene, is receiving tremendous support during this difficult time.
As the investigation continues, police are urging anyone with information or dash cam footage of the accident to contact the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP at 250-748-5522. Witnesses, especially the driver of a white truck that swerved to avoid the crash, are encouraged to come forward. The tragedy serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of road safety.
