WEST HAVEN, CT — In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the community is uniting to support the family of Osvaldo Gonzalez-Hernandez, a 49-year-old man who was allegedly killed in a hit-and-run crash while riding his scooter. Reports indicate that the incident occurred on October 24 at the intersection of First Avenue and Mix Avenue.

Gonzalez-Hernandez was a beloved figure in the local scene, working at We’re Back Pizza in Orange. Michael Avena, the restaurant’s owner, shared that Osvaldo had been part of his team since 2011, first at Abate’s Pizza and then when Avena reopened the pizzeria in 2023. “He always brought smiles and laughter, even in stressful times,” Avena reminisced.
With a heavy heart, Avena has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to help return Gonzalez-Hernandez’s body to his family in Mexico for a proper burial. “Osvaldo has four children and grandchildren who need him home,” Avena stated, urging the community to lend their support.
