World’s Largest Crocodile, Cassius, Allegedly Dies at ‘Astonishing’ Age
The world recently lost Cassius, the largest crocodile in captivity, who passed away on Saturday, November 2, at a wildlife sanctuary. This massive Australian saltwater crocodile, weighing over a ton and stretching nearly 5.5 meters (18 feet) long, had captivated many with his extraordinary size and age. While it’s believed that Cassius was over 110 years old, the exact age remained a mystery.
Cassius was not just a crocodile; he was a Guinness World Record holder, recognized in 2011 as the largest crocodile living in captivity. His home since 1987 was the Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat, where he attracted visitors from around the globe. The sanctuary released a heartfelt statement, noting, “He was very old and believed to be living beyond the years of a wild croc. Cassius will be deeply missed, but our love and memories of him will remain in our hearts forever.”

This giant croc’s legacy is significant, especially after he earned his title following the death of Lolong, a Philippines crocodile who measured a staggering 6.17 meters (20 feet 3 inches) and passed away in 2013. As a beloved figure in the sanctuary, Cassius drew many visitors, contributing to the local tourism industry, particularly in the Northern Territory, where crocodiles are a major attraction.
Marineland Melanesia also expressed gratitude to everyone who visited and showed kindness to Cassius throughout his long life. His passing marks the end of an era, leaving behind memories and stories that will remain etched in the hearts of those who had the chance to see him.
