There’s been a lot of chatter lately about the alleged passing of Rohit Bal, one of India’s most celebrated fashion designers. Reports claim that he died late Friday after a long battle with illness at the age of 63. The Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) took to Instagram to express their sorrow, stating they mourn the loss of a “legendary designer” known for his exquisite fusion of traditional motifs and modern aesthetics. Bal was a trailblazer in the fashion industry, pioneering the profession in the 1990s.
Bal’s influence on Indian fashion is undeniable; his work is said to have “redefined” the industry and inspired countless designers. He had been struggling with heart issues since 2010, which led to several breaks from his work. Interestingly, he had made a brief return to the runway just weeks before these allegations surfaced.
Born in Srinagar in 1961, Bal’s journey began at St. Stephen’s College, where he studied history before pursuing fashion design at the National Institute of Fashion Technology. His label, launched in 1990, grew to include multiple stores across India, the Middle East, and Europe, attracting a clientele that included Hollywood stars and India’s elite.
